Human BCL2 Gene Overview

Gene Name BCL2 apoptosis regulator
Gene Symbol BCL2
Synonyms Bcl-2,PPP1R50
NCBI ID 596
Ensembl ID ENSG00000171791
Uniprot ID P10415
Gene Type Protein coding

Gene Summary

This gene encodes an integral outer mitochondrial membrane protein that blocks the apoptotic death of some cells such as lymphocytes. Constitutive expression of BCL2, such as in the case of translocation of BCL2 to Ig heavy chain locus, is thought to be the cause of follicular lymphoma. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2016]

Mouse Bcl2 Gene Overview

Gene Name B cell leukemia/lymphoma 2
Gene Symbol Bcl2
Synonyms Bcl-2,C430015F12Rik,D630044D05Rik,D830018M01Rik
NCBI ID 12043
Ensembl ID ENSMUSG00000057329
Uniprot ID P10417
Gene Type Protein coding

Gene Summary

This gene encodes a member of the B cell lymphoma 2 protein family. Members of this family regulate cell death in multiple cell types and can have either proapoptotic or antiapoptotic activities. The protein encoded by this gene inhibits mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis. This protein is an integral outer mitochondrial membrane protein that functions as part of signaling pathway that controls mitochondrial permeability in response to apoptotic stimuli. This protein may also play a role in neuron cell survival and autophagy. Abnormal expression and chromosomal translocations of this gene are associated with cancer progression in numerous tissues. Alternate splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2015]
