Human BIRC5 Gene Overview

Gene Name baculoviral IAP repeat containing 5
Gene Symbol BIRC5
Synonyms API4,EPR-1
NCBI ID 332
Ensembl ID ENSG00000089685
Uniprot ID O15392
Gene Type Protein coding

Gene Summary

This gene is a member of the inhibitor of apoptosis (IAP) gene family, which encode negative regulatory proteins that prevent apoptotic cell death. IAP family members usually contain multiple baculovirus IAP repeat (BIR) domains, but this gene encodes proteins with only a single BIR domain. The encoded proteins also lack a C-terminus RING finger domain. Gene expression is high during fetal development and in most tumors, yet low in adult tissues. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jun 2011]

Mouse Birc5 Gene Overview

Gene Name baculoviral IAP repeat-containing 5
Gene Symbol Birc5
Synonyms Api4,TIAP,AAC-11,survivin40
NCBI ID 11799
Ensembl ID ENSMUSG00000017716
Uniprot ID O70201
Gene Type Protein coding

Gene Summary

This gene is a member of the inhibitor of apoptosis (IAP) gene family, which encode negative regulatory proteins that prevent apoptotic cell death. IAP family members usually contain multiple baculovirus IAP repeat (BIR) domains, but this gene encodes proteins with only a single BIR domain. The encoded proteins also lack a C-terminus RING finger domain. In humans, gene expression is high during fetal development and in most tumors yet low in adult tissues. Antisense transcripts have been identified in human that regulate this gene's expression. At least three transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been found for this gene, although at least one of these transcript variants is a nonsense-mediated decay (NMD) candidate. Rat Birc5 Gene Overview

Gene Name baculoviral IAP repeat-containing 5
Gene Symbol Birc5
Synonyms AP14
NCBI ID 64041
Ensembl ID ENSRNOG00000050819
Uniprot ID Q9JHY7
Gene Type Protein coding

Gene Summary

Predicted to enable several functions, including cysteine-type endopeptidase inhibitor activity involved in apoptotic process; protein dimerization activity; and small GTPase binding activity. Involved in several processes, including cellular response to ethanol; cellular response to stem cell factor stimulus; and response to glucocorticoid. Located in apical plasma membrane. Used to study endometriosis and pulmonary hypertension. Biomarker of acute pancreatitis (multiple); artery disease (multiple); congestive heart failure; high grade glioma; and stomach carcinoma. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in prostate cancer and transitional cell carcinoma. Orthologous to human BIRC5 (baculoviral IAP repeat containing 5).
