Human HMGB1 Gene Overview

Gene Name high mobility group box 1
Gene Symbol HMGB1
Synonyms HMG1,HMG3,HMG-1,SBP-1
NCBI ID 3146
Ensembl ID ENSG00000189403
Uniprot ID P09429
Gene Type Protein coding

Gene Summary

This gene encodes a protein that belongs to the High Mobility Group-box superfamily. The encoded non-histone, nuclear DNA-binding protein regulates transcription, and is involved in organization of DNA. This protein plays a role in several cellular processes, including inflammation, cell differentiation and tumor cell migration. Multiple pseudogenes of this gene have been identified. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants that encode the same protein. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2015]

Rat Hmgb1 Gene Overview

Gene Name high mobility group box 1
Gene Symbol Hmgb1
Synonyms Hmg1,Ac2-008
NCBI ID 25459
Ensembl ID
Uniprot ID P63159
Gene Type Protein coding

Gene Summary

Enables several functions, including DNA binding activity; heparin binding activity; and signaling receptor binding activity. Involved in several processes, including positive regulation of cytokine production; psychomotor behavior; and response to bacterium. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including DNA geometric change; induction of positive chemotaxis; and positive regulation of mesenchymal cell proliferation. Located in cytosol; extracellular space; and membrane raft. Used to study artery disease (multiple); brain infarction; congestive heart failure; high grade glioma; and sciatic neuropathy. Biomarker of several diseases, including alcohol use disorder; colon adenocarcinoma; hydrocephalus; middle cerebral artery infarction; and obstructive jaundice. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Orthologous to human HMGB1 (high mobility group box 1). [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Jul 2025]
