Human IRF3 Gene Overview

Gene Name interferon regulatory factor 3
Gene Symbol IRF3
Synonyms IIAE7
NCBI ID 3661
Ensembl ID ENSG00000126456
Uniprot ID Q14653
Gene Type Protein coding

Gene Summary

This gene encodes a member of the interferon regulatory transcription factor (IRF) family. The encoded protein is found in an inactive cytoplasmic form that upon serine/threonine phosphorylation forms a complex with CREBBP. This complex translocates to the nucleus and activates the transcription of interferons alpha and beta, as well as other interferon-induced genes. The protein plays an important role in the innate immune response against DNA and RNA viruses. Mutations in this gene are associated with Encephalopathy, acute, infection-induced, herpes-specific, 7. Mouse Irf3 Gene Overview

Gene Name interferon regulatory factor 3
Gene Symbol Irf3
Synonyms IRF-3,C920001K05Rik
NCBI ID 54131
Ensembl ID ENSMUSG00000003184
Uniprot ID P70671
Gene Type Protein coding

Gene Summary

Enables DNA-binding transcription factor activity, RNA polymerase II-specific; identical protein binding activity; and promoter-specific chromatin binding activity. Involved in positive regulation of macromolecule biosynthetic process; response to virus; and type I interferon-mediated signaling pathway. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including lipopolysaccharide-mediated signaling pathway; regulation of defense response; and response to exogenous dsRNA. Located in nucleus. Is expressed in several structures, including central nervous system; early conceptus; eye; and genitourinary system. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in brain disease. Orthologous to human IRF3 (interferon regulatory factor 3). [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Jul 2025]
