Gene Summary
This gene encodes a protein that belongs to the Kruppel family of transcription factors. The encoded zinc finger protein is required for normal development of the barrier function of skin. The encoded protein is thought to control the G1-to-S transition of the cell cycle following DNA damage by mediating the tumor suppressor gene p53. Mice lacking this gene have a normal appearance but lose weight rapidly, and die shortly after birth due to fluid evaporation resulting from compromised epidermal barrier function. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2015]

Gene Summary
Enables several functions, including DNA binding activity; DNA-binding transcription activator activity, RNA polymerase II-specific; and RNA polymerase II sequence-specific DNA-binding transcription factor recruiting activity. Involved in several processes, including canonical Wnt signaling pathway; establishment of skin barrier; and fat cell differentiation. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including cellular response to leukemia inhibitory factor; regulation of DNA-templated transcription; and regulation of blastocyst development. Located in cytoplasm; euchromatin; and nucleus. Part of transcription regulator complex. Is expressed in several structures, including alimentary system; early conceptus; genitourinary system; limb; and skin. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in hepatocellular carcinoma. Orthologous to human KLF4 (KLF transcription factor 4). [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Jul 2025]
