Human MDM2 Gene Overview

Gene Name MDM2 proto-oncogene
Gene Symbol MDM2
Synonyms HDMX,LSKB,hdm2,ACTFS
NCBI ID 4193
Ensembl ID ENSG00000135679
Uniprot ID Q00987
Gene Type Protein coding

Gene Summary

This gene encodes a nuclear-localized E3 ubiquitin ligase. The encoded protein can promote tumor formation by targeting tumor suppressor proteins, such as p53, for proteasomal degradation. This gene is itself transcriptionally-regulated by p53. Overexpression or amplification of this locus is detected in a variety of different cancers. There is a pseudogene for this gene on chromosome 2. Alternative splicing results in a multitude of transcript variants, many of which may be expressed only in tumor cells. Mouse Mdm2 Gene Overview

Gene Name MDM2 proto-oncogene
Gene Symbol Mdm2
Synonyms Mdm-2,1700007J15Rik
NCBI ID 17246
Ensembl ID ENSMUSG00000020184
Uniprot ID P23804
Gene Type Protein coding

Gene Summary

Enables p53 binding activity and ubiquitin protein ligase activity. Involved in apoptotic process and positive regulation of muscle cell differentiation. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including blood vessel remodeling; circulatory system development; and traversing start control point of mitotic cell cycle. Located in cytoplasm and nucleolus. Is expressed in several structures, including alimentary system; central nervous system; genitourinary system; respiratory system; and sensory organ. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in chronic myeloid leukemia; endocrine gland cancer (multiple); glioblastoma; ichthyosis; and sarcoma. Orthologous to human MDM2 (MDM2 proto-oncogene).
