Human NANOG Gene Overview

Gene Name Nanog homeobox
Gene Symbol NANOG
Synonyms
NCBI ID 79923
Ensembl ID ENSG00000111704
Uniprot ID Q9H9S0
Gene Type Protein coding

Gene Summary

The protein encoded by this gene is a DNA binding homeobox transcription factor involved in embryonic stem (ES) cell proliferation, renewal, and pluripotency. The encoded protein can block ES cell differentiation and can also autorepress its own expression in differentiating cells. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2015]

Rat Nanog Gene Overview

Gene Name Nanog homeobox
Gene Symbol Nanog
Synonyms
NCBI ID 414065
Ensembl ID ENSRNOG00000008368
Uniprot ID
Gene Type Protein coding

Gene Summary

Predicted to enable several functions, including DNA-binding transcription factor activity, RNA polymerase II-specific; RNA polymerase II sequence-specific DNA-binding transcription factor recruiting activity; and lysine-acetylated histone binding activity. Involved in several processes, including cellular response to erythropoietin; cellular response to rapamycin; and multidimensional cell growth. Predicted to be located in nucleolus and nucleoplasm.
