Human SIRT1 Gene Overview

Gene Name sirtuin 1
Gene Symbol SIRT1
Synonyms SIR2,SIR2L1,SIR2alpha
NCBI ID 23411
Ensembl ID ENSG00000096717
Uniprot ID Q96EB6
Gene Type Protein coding

Gene Summary

This gene encodes a member of the sirtuin family of proteins, homologs to the yeast Sir2 protein. Members of the sirtuin family are characterized by a sirtuin core domain and grouped into four classes. The functions of human sirtuins have not yet been determined; however, yeast sirtuin proteins are known to regulate epigenetic gene silencing and suppress recombination of rDNA. Studies suggest that the human sirtuins may function as intracellular regulatory proteins with mono-ADP-ribosyltransferase activity. The protein encoded by this gene is included in class I of the sirtuin family. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Dec 2008]

Mouse Sirt1 Gene Overview

Gene Name sirtuin 1
Gene Symbol Sirt1
Synonyms Sir2,Sir2a,SIR2L1,Sir2alpha
NCBI ID 93759
Ensembl ID ENSMUSG00000020063
Uniprot ID Q923E4
Gene Type Protein coding

Gene Summary

This gene encodes a member of the sirtuin family of proteins, characterized by their deacetylase activity and proposed role in longevity. The encoded protein regulates gene expression in a wide range of cell and tissue types through its NAD+-dependent deacetylation of histones, transcription factors and transcriptional coactivators. Brain-specific overexpression of this gene has been shown to result in increased median lifespan. Viability of homozygous knockout mice for this gene varies with strain background. Homozygous knockout mice of strains that do not exhibit embryonic lethality are sterile and have a reduced lifespan. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. Rat Sirt1 Gene Overview

Gene Name sirtuin 1
Gene Symbol Sirt1
Synonyms Sir2
NCBI ID 309757
Ensembl ID ENSRNOG00000051592
Uniprot ID A0A0G2JZ79
Gene Type Protein coding

Gene Summary

Enables histone deacetylase activity, NAD-dependent and protein kinase B binding activity. Involved in several processes, including cellular response to ketone; negative regulation of apoptotic process; and regulation of peptide hormone secretion. Located in growth cone and nucleus. Used to study middle cerebral artery infarction; obesity; osteoporosis; and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Biomarker of several diseases, including artery disease (multiple); cocaine dependence; impotence; metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease; and obesity. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in Huntington's disease and prostate cancer. Orthologous to human SIRT1 (sirtuin 1). [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Jul 2025]
