Human SUFU Gene Overview

Gene Name SUFU negative regulator of hedgehog signaling
Gene Symbol SUFU
Synonyms BCNS2,SUFUH,JBTS32,SUFUXL,PRO1280
NCBI ID 51684
Ensembl ID ENSG00000107882
Uniprot ID Q9UMX1
Gene Type Protein coding

Gene Summary

The Hedgehog signaling pathway plays an important role in early human development. The pathway is a signaling cascade that plays a role in pattern formation and cellular proliferation during development. This gene encodes a negative regulator of the hedgehog signaling pathway. Defects in this gene are a cause of medulloblastoma. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.[provided by RefSeq, May 2010]

Mouse Sufu Gene Overview

Gene Name SUFU negative regulator of hedgehog signaling
Gene Symbol Sufu
Synonyms Su(fu)
NCBI ID 24069
Ensembl ID ENSMUSG00000025231
Uniprot ID Q9Z0P7
Gene Type Protein coding

Gene Summary

Enables beta-catenin binding activity and protein sequestering activity. Involved in negative regulation of smoothened signaling pathway. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including circulatory system development; negative regulation of macromolecule metabolic process; and regionalization. Located in cilium; cytoplasm; and nucleus. Is expressed in several structures, including alimentary system; central nervous system; embryo mesenchyme; sensory organ; and testis. Used to study nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in Joubert syndrome 32; familial meningioma; medulloblastoma; and nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome 2. Orthologous to human SUFU (SUFU negative regulator of hedgehog signaling). [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Apr 2025]
